Diocese of El Camino Real
St. John the Baptist is part of the Diocese of El Camino Real. Formed in 1980, the Diocese of El Camino Real stretches from Palo Alto to just north of Santa Barbara. Once part of the Diocese of California, the congregations of El Camino Real are spread throughout five counties of San Benito, San Luis Obispo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and Monterey. Although the youngest diocese in California, El Camino Real's Trinity Cathedral, in San Jose, is the oldest cathedral structure in the State of California.
Bishop Mary Gray-Reeves is the third Bishop of El Camino Real. She was ordained and consecrated on Nov 10, 2007 by our Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori along with twenty bishops from around the world. She is the first female Episcopal Diocesan Bishop in the state of California and she is among five of the youngest bishops in the house of bishops.
El Camino Real is named after the Spanish colonial road from Mexico City to Oregon. We are a diocese of 50 congregations, one upper school (York) two K-8 schools and nine preschools. The diocese worships in eight languages: Cantonese, English, Lakota, Laotian, Mandarin, Spanish, Tagalog and Vietnamese.
